Founded in 1882 after the Santa Fe railroad laid an 88-mile track between Benson and Nogales, the Santa Cruz Valley towns of Sonoita and Elgin have a rich history in cattle ranching.
In the 1880’s as many as 3,000 head of cattle shipped to markets in the East each day.
This land is still used for cattle and many steer were upon it on this day, but I was taken by the eery simplicity of this view devoid of cattle.
