Advanced Oxidation Process


Yesterday Tucson Water dedicated the newly completed Advanced Oxidation Process facility, which uses hydrogen peroxide and UV light to remove the contaminant 1,4-dioxane from the drinking water supply.

It is a very involved process, but in a nutshell, what happens is that after going through cartridge filters, hydrogen peroxide is injected. Water then flows through UV / AOP reactors and on to granular activated carbon (GAC) hydrogen peroxide quenching contactors to remove any remaining hydrogen peroxide. The result is 1,4-dioxane-free water, which then goes to TARP for further processing using air stripping to remove TCE contaminants before being added to the city drinking water supply.

The photograph attached is the end of one of the huge UV / AOP reactors (with cover removed to show wiring normally not exposed).
