The Uncompahgre Wilderness in southwest Colorado is a 102,721 square mile U.S. Wilderness area in the north-central region of the San Juan Mountains about ten miles east of Ouray. Elevation ranges from 8,400 to 14,309 ft. There are two fourteeners (peaks with elevations exceeding 14,000 ft) and at least twenty-five thirteeners within this wilderness area and all of it is, to use an over used, but fully proper word, in this case: awesome.

When you are in Uncompahgre, you truly feel like you are in the wilderness. We camped in the middle fork of Cimarron for three days, having to pack in all our water and supplies, with no facilities in the dispersed camping.
The photo above was the view from our campsite, just before sunset. The photo below shows Pinnacle Ridge on our way in to camp by the river in the valley below the ridge.
Free-range cattle owned the road on our trek in, moving out of our way only when they were ready to!
